How do you prioritize today? How do you prioritize in this age of endless, accessible information? There's limitless opportunity to help out, make change, learn, and do better, however our time and resources do have limits. We can't be all things to all people, so we have to prioritize. How do you do that?
I thought about that this morning as I read countless news articles that pointed to opportunities to get involved with change-making activities related to government, politics, pollution, education, health care, poverty, and more. There's lots of problems to solve and endless opportunity to get involved in life in positive ways. Since we can't do it all, we have to prioritize, but how do you do that?
Family first
When it comes to priorities, I put family first. I want to make sure that I'm doing what I can for my family members in positive ways.
Friends matter
My friends in so many ways are lifelines. They bring my life so many positive connections, ideas, opportunities, challenges, and joy. I want to make time for friends.
Community is essential
No matter how private we may be, we can't exist without a positive community, and we all play a role when it comes to contribution to the communities we rely on.
Good govenment is necessary
For people to live well together, we need good government. People have countless ideas about what good government looks and acts like, and it's essential that we become involved in government in ways that promote the good. First of all, we have to vote--if we don't exercise the right to vote, others will choose for us and our voices, needs, and opportunities will be left out of government. Next, we need to find ways to become involved in government so that our government continues to be a government by the people for the people.
Generosity
There may be times when we have little to give and there may be times when we have something to give. The more that we can be generous in ways that promote good living, the better. People will be generous in countless ways--some visible and some invisible. We can't begin to judge the generosity of others, but instead we can find ways to be generous with our own time, energy, and resources.
What you do is who you are
If you take time to reflect on how you spend your time, you'll very clearly see who you are because wha we do is who we are. How do you spend your time? Does that result in the kind of life you hope for? If not, it may be time to make some changes.
A television malfunction led me to think about this topic today as when it comes to media today there are countless choices to make. How do you use media, and what is the best source of accurate, honest, and entertaining media--the kind of media you likely seek to inform your decisions as well as to give you some pleasure and entertainment in life. As I thought about media choices, I thought more about how I spend my time, and the value those activiites bring to my life.
We all have to prioritize in this age of limitless opportunity and access to information. We have to make the time to reflect about who we are, who we want to be, and what's important to us, and then after we reflect, we have to make some decisions about the way we spend our time and resources. I'll be taking some time to do that today. Onward.
