Self care vs care for others

There's definitely a good balance when it comes to self care versus care for others. Yet, how do we reach that balance--what can we do?

First, assess where you fit on this continuum. Do you consider yourself the kind of person that takes really good care of yourself, but is remiss when it comes to care for others, or do you consider yourself the kind of person that is great when it comes to caring for others, but not so great when it comes to self care? Perhaps you're one of the people that strikes the good balance of self care and care for others with the knowledge that if you neglect yourself, you won't be able to give as much or as well to others.

I thought about this challenge today as I made a few choices for the days ahead. There are people out there that I care for--people I care about, and people I want to support well. Then there's the needed self care that takes time and attention. How can I strike the balance? The answer lies in an answer that fits many of life's questions which is to establish a good routine--with a good routine you ensure that you have time for those you care about and for yourself.

Another good way to strike this balance is what I call the "empty drawer rule" which is to not utilize your energy or resources to the max, but instead keep some reserves for time of need. If you're always depleted, you'll never have much to give particularly in times of emergency or unexpected need, but if, as one family members says, live beneath your means with respect to resources, energy, and time, you'll have the extra when needed.

And of course, make time to stop, listen, and reflect about the world around you including the people you love and care for--what can you do for them and how can you be helpful?

There's a balance to be had when it comes to care for self and care for others. It's important to strike that balance as well as you can. Onward.
