The changing expectations of caregivers

Caregivers of any kind have to take a big step back to review the work they do now and then because no matter whether you care for someone who is ill, young, or in need in any other way, the situation will likely continue to change thus demanding different kinds of care. Sometimes those changes catch you unprepared, and when that happens it can be frustrating. Yet, you have to accept that bump in the road, regroup, and set the stage for positive caregiving going forward.

These are some questions that can help you assess the situation?

Safety?

Are those you care for safe. Safety is the first priority. Make the changes you need to make to assure safety.

Basic needs?

Do those you care for have access to their basic needs of food, clothing, shelter, and health care?

Happiness?

Perhaps this should be number one on the list, but is the person or persons you are caring for happy? If not, what can you do to bring happiness to the situation?

Development?

How can you help those you care for develop in positive ways? No matter your age, you can develop in ways that bring satisfaction and fulfillment?

Comfort?

In many caregiving situations, comfort is a top priority.

In most caregiving situations, it's great to work with a good team who can support one another in those caregiving activities. It's very difficult to provide care on your own since caregiving can be tough and isolating work. If you don't have a ready team in your midst, you may need to search for a social agency or other group to help you with your caregiving responsibilities. Onward.
