A world of need; a world of potential

Last night a family member relayed a story of need related to a large number of refugees--refugees with sub-par housing, few clothes, little food, and questionable security. My heart ached listening to the story--I feared for the children's and women's safety. What can I do to help, I wondered.

When we look out at the world we live in, we sill recognize seemingly limitless need and amazing potential too. As I thought about these mostly Haitian refugees, I also thought about the fact that Harvard's new president is the child of Haitian immigrants. Her rise to leadership is a powerful storyof hope.

Also as my family member spoke, I thought about the fact that we need to update systems of care everywhere in the world so that people in need get what they need in safe, speedy ways. How do we do that on our own and how do we do that with the groups we belong to?

The world is a world of incredible need and amazing potential, and each of us with our peers, colleagues, friends, and family members need to find ways to fulfill those needs and meet that potential. What can I do? What can we all do?

I'll be thinking about my resources, time, associations, and focus as I consider these questions today. I have a few ideas that I want to share with my family member and friends. I hope we can find a positive way to help in this situation and others. Our world has great potential to foster good living in countless ways. That's a good aim for all of us.
