Over time relationships change. Sometimes the changes make a lot of sense and sometimes the changes are confusing. The challenge is to change with those relationships in ways that sustain good relationships in your life.
Reciprocity
Reciprocity is an important aspect of good relationships. When relationships are one-way streets, those relationships don't work as well or at all. But when relationships are balanced, they tend to work well. I do for you and you do for me is the mantra of good relationships.
Fun and happiness
Good relationships tend to be enjoyable. When a relationship becomes drudgery, that relationship loses value. Sometimes the fun and happiness goes away simply because of natural life changes. You and your friends may not enjoy the same activities anymore. At other times, distance can cause fractures in the enjoyment a relationship brings. Yet, good relationships usually include some fun and happiness.
Respect
Good relationships thrive on respect. When friends become disrespectful to one another, relationships suffer and possibly end.
Support and patience
Good friends are supportive and patient. Friendship is not always rosy, It's normal for friends to have both good times and bad. True friends are there for you in good times and bad. Good friends support one another and are patient with one another.
Celebrate
Good friends celebrate your good times--they are happy for you when life goes well. They are not jealous or vindictive.
Be yourself
Good friends allow you to be yourself. They don't expect you to be different than who you are.
Good relationships are a vital part of life, one we all need to nurture in order to live our best possible lives. Onward.
