What do people want; what do people need?

As you look around at your circle of friends, family, and other acquaintances, what do you notice that they need? What do you have for them?

Affirmation

Many I know seek affirmation. It's not that they lack confidence or surety about who they are or where they are headed, but it's just that a little support and affirmation will boost their direction which likely includes some brave, new steps. People are often making changes in their lives, and those changes benefit from affirmation.

Invitation

Some people are on their own in life. They may have little contact for lots of reasons. An invitation can mean a lot to people like that.

Independence

For others, they may need space and independence. Perhaps they've relied on you and others for a long time, and now they're ready to go out on their own. In situations like this, you want to give people the space they need to build and develop their lives.

Help

There are people who are busy with big tasks and a bit of help with those endeavors greatly helps them. For example, you may have a loved one who is taking care of young children--a helping hand is almost always welcome in situations like this.

Motivation

Going from step A to step B in any endeavor or pursuit can be difficult, but a little motivation can go a long way.

Compassion

Making mistakes in life can be very hurtful, and in cases like this, compassion truly helps. When someone can sit by your side without judgement and show compassion for your errors or missteps, that helps a lot.

Laughter

Lightening up with good humor and good times brings the zest and energy to life.

A Good Meal

To prepare a meal for someone especially someone who is always cooking for themselves or who is unable to access or prepare a good meal is a great gift.

There are countless ways we can give to one another--countless ways to demonstrate to people that they matter. We have to give to ourselves too and make sure we're getting what we need so we can be there for others too. There's a balance to be had here, a balance that's worth striving for. Onward.
