A world of love and care: loan forgiveness

Sadly, too many in our world today work against what is right and good for others. Too many raise objections to helpful policies and actions that lift lives, and this is very sad because when people are able to live their best lives, we all benefit.

When Elizabeth Warren and others began to talk about loan forgiveness, I was skeptical. I sacrificed to pay my college loans and the loans of my children. I was fortunate that I didn't get ensnared in predatory loan practices or unjust institutions like Trump University. As we know, many institutions used the loan system to convince unknowing students to take on big loans which profited those institutions greatly while oppressing the students with great debt. What's worse is that many of those institutions like Trump University didn't follow through by helping those students get the degrees and education they initially took out the loans to get thus leaving students saddled with great debt and without the skills, education, or degrees to get the kinds of jobs which would help them to pay off those debts. Many students were bamboozled by these predatory institutions and loans.

I was fortunate to attend quality insituttions that did provide me with the needed support to get a solid education, skills, and degrees which did result in a good career as an educator. As an educator, I was frugal and able to to pay off the loans I had as well as pay for my children's college educations. I'm proud of that. Though my family did not make a huge salary, we made too much to get much financial aid so the college degree prices were steep, but worth it. Like me, my children attended reputable institutions where they got the support they needed to both graduate and learn a lot which resulted in good jobs that have paid fair wages.

So when I first heard about loan forgiveness, my initial reaction was, "Hey, I paid my children's loans and my loans, why don't others do that too." Yet, trusting the good work of Elizabeth Warren, I decided to look more deeply at the issue--why would she support such an action. I did the research and the math which led me to learn that not only would loan forgiveness improve the lives of those saddled with onerous loans, but it would help the entire economy in countless ways. I became a fan of loan forgiveness. I know it's the right thing. Plus, the government bailed out ultra wealthy banks with lots and lots of money. If we can bail out wealthy banks, we can help struggling Americans saddled with overwhelming school loans.

Plus, recently many wealthy individuals received giant PPP loans due to COVID. Many of those loans were forgiven which means many Americans, mostly Americans of considerable wealth, received tax-payer funds for free--huge payouts for free!!!!!  And now many of those Republicans who received that free money are complaining about forgiving loans for struggling Americans. That's just not fair.

Clearly MAGA America follows the Trumpway which is to work for self at the expense of others at all times--they take, take, take and don't give back. They obstruct so much good for our country, the kind of good that frees people to live their best lives. Instead they saddle people with unhealthy, hurtful, dangerous, and deadly limitations in order to prop up their personal pleasure, power, profit, protection, and power. It's dehumanizing and we can do better.

The more we work for a world of love and care, the better we'll all be. Life doesn't have to be a "survival of the fittest" journey, but instead, it can be a collaborative journey to lift each other up and offer everyone their best chance at a good life. Too many privileged Americans are stuck in a me-first competitive mode where they leave too many people behind in oppressive, dangerous, destructive ways. It's clearly time to change this. Onward.
