Family Reunions 2023

Memorial Day marks the start of family/friend reunion season. I am a fan of family/friend reunions for many reasons. First, when we are connected to a larger group of people that know us and care for us, that creates a loving community that's there for you when you need a boost in any way. Next, family and friend groups share history, and when we come together, we have a chance to revisit that history in positive ways. And, it can be lots of fun to gather with people you love and care about.

As I think about the reunions ahead, I'm thinking about what makes these reunions enjoyable and valuable.

Children

As a child, I loved our family get togethers. I remember feeling a sense of warmth as we gathered together. There was a lot of laughter and good times at those events. In many ways, those events created a love of family and a value for community in me. I want our family/friend reunions to do the same for the children in our midst--I want the children to feel welcome and happy. So for the reunions that include children, I'll find ways to bring child-friendly games, toys, foods, and care.

Healthy foods

These reunions will include lots of healthy foods including breakfast bars, picnic lunches, home cooked dinners, comforting snacks, and some dinners out too.

Inclusive activities

The reunions will include a number of inclusive activities that people of all ages can engage in. For example our extended family beach meet-up takes place at a beach that's easily accessible to all family members. Planning activities that everyone can afford and take parat in brings people together.

Adventure and novelty

I love adventure and novelty, so I'll likely include some new, adventurous activities that others can take part in if they choose. I find that novel, adventurous activities create awesome togetherness, great stories, and good memories. That said, it's important to do the research related to those events as you want to avoid danger if possible.

Loose-tight schedules

When reunions are over-scheduled, those events are less successful. You want to make the reunion schedules loose-tight so that people can match the event to their own needs and interests too.

Open-minded

When groups of people get together there's always a bit of surprise with regard to what happens. You can't anticipate all that will happen and you have to be ready to go with it with an open, positive mind.

Onward.
